How to Tell If Your Dog's Harness Actually Fits (A 3-Point Check)

Your dog can't tell you their harness is uncomfortable. They can't point to a spot that's rubbing, or say that a strap is pressing somewhere it shouldn't. All they can do is show it — in a shortened stride, a sudden reluctance to go for a walk, a bald patch that shows up months later and gets blamed on "just shedding."

Most people size a harness the way they'd size a jacket: measure the chest, pick S/M/L, done. But a harness that's the "right size" on a chart can still sit in exactly the wrong place on your dog's body. Fit isn't really about size — it's about placement relative to your dog's skeleton. And that's something you can actually check yourself, in about two minutes, without any special equipment.

Here are the three spots worth checking, and why each one matters more than it looks like it should.

1. The front strap should sit on the sternum — not the neck

On a Y-shaped harness, the strap that runs down the chest is designed to land on the sternum: the flat bone running down the center of your dog's chest. That's a deliberate design choice, not an aesthetic one. Bone can handle sustained pressure and the occasional tug without injury. The soft tissue just above it — the trachea, esophagus, thyroid, and a cluster of nerves — can't.

This is exactly why the height of the front strap matters so much. Vest-style harnesses, H-style harness and many "cinch" designs, often ride high enough that the strap sits right at the base of the neck instead of the chest. At that height, a harness is functionally doing what a collar does: putting pressure on the windpipe and surrounding soft tissue every time your dog pulls, lunges after a squirrel, or gets a sudden correction on the leash. If you've ever chosen a harness specifically to get pressure off your dog's neck, a harness that rides high defeats the purpose.

How to check it: Look at your dog from the front while they're standing normally. The strap should cross the middle of the chest, roughly level with where their front legs meet the body — not up near the collar line. If you can slide a finger up from the strap and feel your dog's throat before you run out of harness, it's sitting too high.

2. There should be visible room at the armpits

The point where a dog's front leg meets their body — the armpit, or axilla — is one of the highest-friction zones on any harness, because it's constantly in motion. Every step swings the leg forward and back through that joint, and any strap sitting too close to it gets dragged across the same patch of skin thousands of times on a single walk.

A well-fitted Y-harness leaves a visible gap here — enough to slide two or three fingers between the strap and your dog's leg. That gap isn't just for comfort standing still; it's what allows the full range of motion a dog needs to walk normally. Step-in harnesses and several no-pull designs are more prone to running a strap directly through this crease, because their construction prioritizes speed of putting the harness on over legroom underneath it.

The consequences compound over time rather than showing up immediately. Early on, it might just be a bit of coat rubbing. Left unaddressed, that turns into chafing, localized hair loss, and — because dogs learn quickly — a dog who starts to hesitate, dodge, or resist when the harness comes out, even if they can't tell you why.

How to check it: With the harness on, try to fit two to three fingers flat between the strap and the inside of your dog's leg at the armpit. Then watch them walk a few steps — the gap should still be there in motion, not just when they're standing still.

3. The straps should stay completely clear of the shoulder blades

This is the check people skip most often, because a harness sitting on the shoulder doesn't look wrong the way a too-tight collar does. But the shoulder blade (scapula) is the joint that has to rotate freely every time your dog's front leg swings forward — it's arguably the single most important joint for a harness to leave alone.

A Y-shaped harness is built specifically to route the strap around the shoulder blade rather than across it, so the joint keeps its full range of motion. Many step-in and standard harnesses do the opposite: the chest strap crosses directly over the top of the scapula. Restrict that joint, even partially, and the effects show up in ways that are easy to misattribute to something else entirely — a shortened stride, chafing along the strap line, and other joints quietly picking up the slack to compensate for the lost motion. Over months, that compensation pattern is exactly the kind of thing canine physiotherapists get called in to untangle.

How to check it: Watch your dog walk from the side. As their front leg swings forward, you should be able to see the shoulder blade move freely underneath the skin, with no strap sitting on top of it or restricting that swing.

Why this is worth two minutes of your time

None of these three checks are about how a harness looks in a product photo. They're about whether the design respects where your dog's skeleton actually is — sternum instead of throat, a clear armpit instead of a friction point, a free shoulder instead of a restricted one. That's also the standard canine physiotherapists and force-free (R+) trainers use when they evaluate gear: not "does it look secure," but "does it let the dog move the way they're built to move."

The good news is that none of this requires guesswork. Put the harness on, run through the three checks above, and watch your dog take a few steps. If something doesn't look right in motion, it's worth adjusting the fit or reconsidering the style — before it turns into a habit your dog has quietly built around discomfort.
